FOR SOME NEW PERMITS, YOU MAY BE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A CERTIFICATE OF ELEVATION from a licensed Engineer or Land Surveyor. This is a federal government requirement designed to prevent improper placement or construction of any structure in an area that has been Federally designated as a flood prone area. The certificate should show that all living areas of the dwelling are 1 foot above the base flood elevation. This requirement only affects property that lies in a Federally designated flood zone. However, it applies if any portion of your property is in a flood zone, even if that's not where you plan to build.
