- 1.
Driveways
- The lot you plan to place your
new residence on will most likely require a driveway pipe. You will need to
contact the County Engineering Department at 251-690-8595. The engineering
department decides what size drainage pipe you will need to purchase. Mobile
County will install, free of charge, your first driveway for a home owner
occupied residence. Mobile County will not install driveway pipes for
contractor/home builders and/or property developed for commercial
purposes.
- 2. Windstorm
insurance
- Because of the extensive
hurricane damage in the Southeast in recent years, homeowner insurance
companies are careful about issuing new policies that cover windstorm damage.
In some parts of Mobile County, it may not be possible to get this coverage.
Check with an insurance agent before you build.
- 3. Flood
Insurance
- The standard federal flood
insurance policy that is required if you are in a federally designated flood
prone area does not cover the contents of your home. You must advise your
insurance agent if you want your contents insured against flood
damage.
- 4. Remodeling in
the flood zone
- If you improve an existing home
in a flood zone, you may need to bring the entire house into compliance with
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) regulations by raising it above
flood level. Be sure to check with the County Building Inspection Office before
you start.
- 5. Restrictive
covenants
- If you plan to build or set up
manufactured housing on a subdivision lot, it's wise to check for
restrictive covenants early in the process. Checking for restrictive
covenants requires a trip to the Mobile County Probate Court Records Department
in the Old County Courthouse at 109 Government Street. Staff members will show
you how to look up the subdivision covenants requirements.
