Residential Building Permits:
Enforcement of Building Codes

The County Inspection office has the sole obligation of enforcing proper building codes and regulations. If inspectors find that you are not in compliance, and you refuse to make the proper changes needed to comply, they will issue a stop work order. If the builder and/or the property owner still refuses to comply, the County Inspections Dept. can take legal action such as asking the County Sheriff to intervene and enforce these codes and regulations.

One last thing . . .

If you have hired a contractor who asked you to get the building permit for your new home or addition, ask why. Most contractors prefer to get their own permits. Frequently, contractors who want you to get the permit are not licensed. Contractors are now tested on the technical aspects of building a home. If you get the permit for them, you may be stuck dealing with inspectors over the contractor's mistakes. Also, by obtaining the building permit for the contractor you have signed away your right for help through the Home Builders Recovery Act which is available to home builders in case of loss of a home during construction.
