The bold
and modern design of the Mobile Government Plaza makes it a symbol for Mobile
entry into the 21st century. The building also creates an exciting new context
for its historic neighbors. The three-member Mobile County Commission
built the facility to consolidate city and county services in a convenient
downtown location. Some county and city offices were spread out over Mobile
County, so the Commission felt it would save tax dollars to build a facility to
centralize services in downtown. Commissioners at the time this project began
were Samuel L. Jones, Jim Mason and Bill Menton. Instead of using one
general contractor to build the Plaza, the Commission opted for a construction
management team. The joint venture of Hardin Construction Group Inc., an
Atlanta, Georgia firm, and Haston Construction Co. of Mobile managed the
project. Construction was broken into 31 smaller bid categories to maximize
local participation.
The Plaza
consists of two building - a nine-story Judicial building and a
ten-story Administration building. These two towers are joined by a massive
50,000 square-foot public atrium. |
